‘Canât tell you where weâre rankedâ: Saban talks Alabamaâs place in polls
Nick Saban has a lot on his plate each week as the head coach of Alabama football. He’s generally preparing the team for a matchup against a solid SEC opponent, while juggling recruiting, fundraising and the other duties of leading the Crimson Tide.
One thing he’s not concerned about is polls. On Monday, he was asked if he thinks about where his team is ranked during the season.
Predictably, Saban said he does not.
“Alright, look, we’re trying to play one game at a time,” Saban said. “We’re trying to improve our team. I can’t tell you where we’re ranked. I can’t tell you what the standings are. I think everybody kind of realizes the importance of every game that we play. The whole focus is how can we play better? How can we play good? How can we improve not worrying about some outcome-oriented thing that may happen two months from now?
Alabama is currently 10th in the coaches poll and 11th in Associated Press media poll. The Crimson Tide plays Texas A&M in College Station this Saturday.
Saban went on to describe where his focus is entering that game.
“I’m focused on what am I gonna do in the next five minutes, the next 30 minutes, the next hour, the next two hours, the next three hours to help us play better as a team,” Saban said. “That’s all I care about and I think that’s my job.”
Saban is a voter on the coaches poll this year. However, he noted he doesn’t handle that duty himself.
He passes much of the poll work to Alabama’s assistant athletics director for communications, Josh Maxson. That’s fairly standard practice for coaches who are poll voters.
“So we got guys like (Maxson) over here who can do standings and rankings and put a poll together and say who should be this and that, he’s good at that,” Saban said. “I thank him for it. It’s less time I have to spend doing it.”
Saban’s Alabama team will face Texas A&M at 2:30 Saturday. The game will be aired on CBS.
